Touch ID not working on iPhone 6

Touch ID on my iPhone 6 has stopped working. The home button is free of fingerprints & smudges. Even after restarting as well as restoring the iPhone, the problem persists.

What could be the issue & resolution?

iPhone 6, iOS 10

Follow the steps here, including under the heading "Get help with Touch ID" (including, if necessary, contacting Apple Support or making a Genius Bar reservation):
